Calibre Steel celebrates BlueScope’s transformative $300 million Plate Mill Modernisation Project at Port Kembla Steelworks, a significant step forward in strengthening Australia’s sovereign steel manufacturing capabilities.

This comprehensive upgrade, approved by the NSW Government in June 2024, will see the installation of a new modern walking beam furnace and the development of an additional heavy plate processing route. These enhancements are set to increase the mill’s production capacity from 430,000 to 600,000 tonnes per year, meeting the growing demands of critical sectors such as renewable energy, defence, and major infrastructure projects.

The project underscores a commitment to sustainability, with measures aimed at reducing emissions intensity and improving process efficiency. It is expected to inject approximately $650 million into the New South Wales economy, creating around 95 full-time construction jobs during peak periods and an additional 18 operational positions.

As a key player in the Australian steel industry, Calibre Steel recognises the importance of this modernisation in ensuring a reliable and high-quality steel supply for our customers. We are excited to support BlueScope in this endeavour and look forward to the positive impact it will have on the industry and the broader community.
